New Delhi (08.04.2022): The Centre has started considering names for the coveted post of Principal Scientific Advisor (PSA) to the Government of India; a post that fell vacant after the extended tenure of Professor K Vijay Raghavan ended on April 02, 2022. Raghavan held the post since 2018.
Reportedly, three names have been doing rounds for the coveted position namely; ISRO scientist Shailesh Nayak (formerly Secretary, Department of Earth Sciences); the outgoing CSIR DG Dr. Shekhar C Mande retiring this month-end and Dr. Ashutosh Sharma, former Union Secretary of Department of Science & Tech.
If some well-placed sources are to be believed Dr Mande may miss the bus while speculations about an extension in Mande’s tenure as DG CSIR are rife.
It is worth underlining that the PSA has no specific tenure and age of appointment and retirement. Raghavan had in 2018 succeeded R Chidambaram who served as PSA for sixteen years (Nov 2001 to Mar 2018) until he attained 82 years of age. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, as the first PSA, served during 1999 and 2002 and hence the relatively quick end to Raghavan's tenure as PSA came as a surprise even though he had got a year's extension.
The office of the PSA was created under the Vajpayee government to advise the govt on policies and interventions pertaining to science & tech aspects of socio-economic importance to the government.
