Rishi Kumar Shukla (IPS:1983:MP) has taken
charge as the new CBI chief on Monday, 04 Feb, amid the ongoing tussle between
the CBI and Kolkata police. Announcement of Shukla’s appointment (on 02 Feb
2019) came after the second meeting of the PM-led panel remained ‘inconclusive’.
The same day, the Supreme Court had expressed displeasure at non-appointment of
a regular CBI director. On Saturday, Congress leader Mallikarjun
Kharge sent a dissent note on Shukla's appointment, citing the officer's lack
of experience in anti-corruption investigations. Shukla has taken charge at a time when the reputation
and credibility of country’s premier investigation agency is at its lowest. After being reinstated by SC on 8 January,
Former CBI Director Alok Verma was removed by the PM Modi-led panel on 10
January.
