The appeal has been made to give "purchase preference" to the local products under the "Make in India" scheme. The Textile Ministry has also asked the ministries to furnish details about the quantity of content bought by them from the textile sector. Textile industry accounts for 2% of the GDP and 15 % of the country's export earnings, thus providing employment to over 45 million people making it one of the biggest employers in the country. Earlier Integrated Scheme for Development of Silk Industry was approved by the Cabinet headed by PM Narendra Modi. This will benefit the silk industry of the country.
