Thiruvananthapuram (27.10.2024): In an unusual development and yet another posting goof up by the Centre, the Kerala government appointed Pranabjyoti Nath (IAS: 2005: KL) as Chief Electoral Officer while the Centre ordered his appointment as CVO of NALCO on the same day. Nath on Saturday assumed the office as the state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) a day after the Union and Kerala governments issued separate orders appointing him to two different posts.
The CEO post in Kerala was vacant since August 5, 2024 when the then-CEO Sanjay M Kaul (IAS: 2001: KL) left for central deputation. The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) of the Centre issued an order on Friday appointing Nath as the CVO of NALCO. Sources say the DoPT’s order was uploaded shortly after the Kerala Govt announced the appointment.
The ECI on Thursday selected Nath as CEO from a panel of names sent by the state government. Acting on the EC order, Kerala govt issued its order on Friday as by-elections to Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency and Chelakkara Assembly seat were already notified for November 13, 2024.
As per DoPT source, the Kerala government itself had given cadre clearance for Nath’s Central deputation well before proposing his name for State CEO. However, looking at the administrative exigency, the usual practice of giving officers six weeks to join, Nath can join as CVO after the elections.
Kerala IAS gets two postings in quick succession; another goof up in posting or just an administrative exigency?
