Washington DC (22.07.2025):Deputy Managing Director at the International
Monetary Fund (IMF) Gita Gopinath is likely to step down and will return to
Harvard University as a professor of economics. She will join the Harvard
Economics Department on September 1, 2025 as the first Gregory and Ania Coffey
Professor of Economics.
"After nearly 7 amazing years at the IMF, I have decided to return to my
academic roots," Gopinath, the first female chief economist in IMF
history, said in a post on X.
Before her tenure at the IMF, Gopinath held significant academic positions. She
was the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics at
Harvard from 2005 to 2022. Prior to that, she served as an assistant professor
of economics at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business from 2001
to 2005. Gopinath joined the IMF in January 2019 as chief economist. Her
contributions led to her promotion as the first deputy managing director in
January 2022. Her work has been pivotal in addressing global economic
challenges during her time at the IMF.
