Chennai (29.08.2025): With incumbent Director General of Police of Tamil Nadu Shankar Jiwal (IPS: 1990: TN) set to retire on August 31, 2025, the State government may appoint an ad hoc DGP. Since the proposal comprising the list of DGP-rank officers qualifying to the top post was not sent to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) within the stipulated time, the State is left with no other option but to appoint an officer to hold additional charge. G Venkatraman, DGP (Administration), is likely to be given additional charge.
The State government did not send the proposal to the UPSC three months before vacancy arose. The file would be dispatched in a day or two. The State had recently informed the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court that the process was on.
Seema Agrawal (IPS: 1990: TN), Rajeev Kumar (IPS: 1992: TN) and Sandeep Rai Rathore (IPS: 1992: TN) are expected to find a place in the panel of the UPSC. The other DGP-rank officers in consideration are K Vannia Perumal (IPS: 1992: TN), Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal (IPS: 1994: TN), G Venkatraman (IPS: 1994: TN), Vinit Dev Wankhede (IPS: 1994: TN) and Sanjay Mathur (IPS: 1994: TN).
