New Delhi (18.11.2022): Contrary to the general perception that everything is hunky dory for people resigning civil services to join the corporate world. Unlike stability in civil services, attrition rate is not only very high but frequent as well. Director Public Policy at Meta India Rajiv Aggrawal’s (IAS: 1993: UP) exit is a testimony to the fact. He joined Meta in September 2021 after his short stint with Uber India for a package of approximately Rs 3 cr per annum after his VRS from IAS in 2019. Now, Aggrawal is out of Meta too.
It may be underlined that WhatsApp India head Abhijit Bose too resigned along with Aggrawal who was replaced by Shivnath Thukral. Facebook parent Meta announced the appointment of Sandhya Devanathan as the VP of Meta India. Shivnath Thukral, the director of WhatsApp Public Policy in India, has now been made the director of Public Policy for all Meta brands in the country.
Archana Gulati (IP&TA&FS: 1989), former joint secretary with NITI Aayog who joined Google as public policy head and had served the tech company for five months after quitting her government job, has resigned from Google in May 2022.
Coming back to Aggrawal’s context, it is noteworthy that there is no dearth of top jobs for bureaucrats in the corporate world yet not a cake walk. Joining corporate offices post retirement or after VRS for civil servants is becoming a norm now. In past three months or so five IAS officers – Sreenivasulu (IAS: 2005: UP), Vidya Bhushan (IAS: 2008: UP), Renuka Kumar (IAS: 1987: UP), Juthika Patankar (IAS: 1988: UP), Vikas Gothawal (IAS: 2003: UP) – have sought VRS and out of these five at least three are likely to join corporate world. Alankrita Singh, suspended IPS officers of UP cadre and wife of Vidya Bhushan, too is out of India and may go for corporate job.
Sometimes Corporates hire them as facilitators to deal with the government policies. This is something often cited while countering the lateral entry as well. In the present days’ context, big social media players like Meta, Google and Twitter have been laying off their top geeks frequently. Elon Musk fired almost all top brass of Twitter, Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg announced firing over 11,000 employees reducing Meta’s staff strength by 13 per cent.
