Country's first CDS Gen Bipin Rawat, wife and 11 Jawans killed in a helicopter crash

New Delhi (08.12.2021): Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat along with his wife Madhulika Rawat and eleven other military personnel were killed on Wednesday afternoon when an Indian Airforce Mi 17V5 helicopter crashed near Coonoor in Tamilnadu. He was India's first CDS and Secretary, Department of Military Affairs. He served as chief of Defence Staff from January 2020 until his death.

Rawat was commissioned into 5th battalion of Gorkha rifles on December 16, 1978, the same unit as his father. He was the third officer from  Gorkha Brigade to become the Chief of Army Staff , after Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and General Dalbir Singh Suhag. He took office of Chief of Army Staff on December 31, 2016 after retirement of General Dalbir Singh Suhag.
