New Delhi (19.11.2025): A group of 272 prominent citizens has issued a letter criticising Leader of Opposition and the Congress to undermine constitutional bodies particularly the Election Commission of India (ECI). The group included 16 former judges, 123 retired civil servants, 14 former diplomats and 133 retired armed forces officers for what they describe as a coordinated attempt to demean these organisations.
The signatories of the letter say they are “senior citizens of civil society" who are alarmed by what they see as an escalating assault on democratic institutions through aggressive political rhetoric. They accuse certain political leaders of choosing provocation over constructive policy engagement and of levelling unsubstantiated allegations to create distrust in institutions.
The letter also claims that after targeting the armed forces, the judiciary, Parliament and other constitutional authorities, similar “systematic and conspiratorial attacks" are now being directed at the Election Commission. The signatories allege that the Leader of Opposition has repeatedly accused the Commission of serious misconduct, including claims of “vote theft," without offering any credible evidence.
According to the signatories, senior Congress leaders, members of other parties, left-leaning NGOs, ideologically driven commentators and “attention seekers" have used increasingly aggressive language, even alleging that the Commission has become the “B-team of the BJP." They claimed that such rhetoric falls apart under scrutiny, noting that the ECI has publicly explained its SIR methodology, followed court-approved verification processes, removed ineligible names and added legitimate voters. These accusations, the signatories say, appear aimed at draping political frustration as an institutional crisis.
