New Delhi (09.08.2021): Every farmer knows only too well that retailers of diammonium phosphate, (DAP), urea, potassium, and other fertilizers, as a rule, sell these items at prices higher than their marked ones. Officials in every state are only too aware of this corrupt practice that generates hundreds of crores of black money every year but they do nothing.
However, a public-spirited official has set an exemplary precedent.
He is G Surya Praveenchand (IAS:2019:AP).
When he received complaints from farmers about how they were being fleeced by fertilizer traders, he disguised himself and approached some fertilizer traders as a purchaser in his jurisdictional area Kaikaluru and Mudinepalli sub-divisions of Andhra Pradesh.
On discovering that the retail merchants were indeed selling subsidized fertilizers much above their printed prices, he has moved the arms of the administration to curb this corrupt practice as well as to ensure that traders don't resort to hoarding to create an artificial shortage.
