The current Chief Secretary, Manoj Kumar Singh (IAS: 1988: UP), is set to complete his tenure on Thursday. Top sources say that a key decision, linked with the ambitious Jewar Airport, taken recently may work favourably for the incumbent, else there is no clear indication yet from either the state or central government whether he will receive an extension or if a new appointment will be made.

The primary contenders for the position are Shashi Prakash Goyal (IAS: 1989: UP) and Deepak Kumar (IAS: 1990: UP). Both officers are highly regarded for their competence and command over the affairs. Goyal is seen as a legitimate successor, while Kumar is seen as a viable successor.

A third officer, Devesh Chaturvedi (IAS: 1989: UP), who was also in contention, has reportedly opted out of the race. He is expected to continue his role as the Union Secretary for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare.
