The BJP leadership has played a crucial card by inducting the son of former Congress heavyweight Shankarsinh Vaghela into party fold last week. Political observers feel that this step could be counterproductive, as he would not accept this kind of move from the BJP leadership.
The announcement to induct Vaghela's son came from the BJP state president just ahead of a BJP National President Amit Shah's high-profile event in a private university at the outskirts of Gandhinagar. This development is seen as a setback for the Congress. But his induction may not be useful for the BJP too.
It may be recalled that ahead of 2017 Gujarat Assembly elections Shankarsingh had floated his own political party. It was said that it was done under the influence of BJP to weaken Congress' poll prospect. Vaghela was assured for a gubernatorial assignment but he was never given this position. Meanwhile, his son joining BJP is believed to have created a rift in the family. Immediately after his son's joining, Shankarsinh reportedly announced at a press conference that his son should return home within seven days. In fact, he gave a veiled warning to the BJP for a course-correction. In case the BJP failed to fulfil the promise made to Shankarsingh, he may try to give a jolt to the BJP.
Earlier in July 2016 Apna Dal led by Union Minister Anupriya Patel's mother Krishna Patel, had snapped ties with BJP accusing the latter of not honouring the commitment. This incited family feud and Anupriya was expelled by Krishna last year. Anupriya Singh Patel was later inducted in the union council of ministers.
But Shankarsinh still wields substantial political clout in Gujarat. If the differences aggravate further, he may try to give a jolt to BJP.
