New Delhi (27.07.2026): Despite the fact that over a decade-long tenure of NTPC Chairman Gurdeep Singh is coming to an end on July 31, 2026 and the Search-cum-Selection Committee (SCSC) had already interviewed 18 candidates on July 4, 2026, there is a delay in the announcement of the name of new Chairman.  Post SCSC interaction, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) was expected to take its final call but nothing happened so far.  In the given situation, it is likely that the NTPC Chairman may get one-month extension as an ad hoc arrangement.

Gurdeep Singh’s tenure as Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC Limited will be over this month end after more than ten years at the top of India’s biggest power company. In July 2025, the ACC gave him a one-year contractual extension. The official order said he would continue from August 1, 2025 till July 31, 2026, or until a regular new CMD joins, whichever comes first. That date is now only a few days away.

Singh first took charge of the NTPC CMD in February 2016. He had served as Managing Director of Gujarat State Electricity Corporation before joining NTPC. 

During his tenure, the company’s installed capacity crossed 75 GW. NTPC kept generating nearly one-fourth of India’s total electricity even though its share of total capacity is smaller. The company also pushed hard into solar, wind and other clean energy projects.

Green hydrogen and carbon-capture work also started under his watch. Plant efficiency stayed strong and the financial results remained steady year after year. These steps helped NTPC stay the backbone of India’s power sector.
