New Delhi: It is the floor
management of the house by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that seems to be
working for party when the triple talaq bill is introduced in the Rajya Sabha.
The Bill has already been cleared in the Lok Sabha. But actually opposition
political parties are wary if the bill will be stalled in the Rajya Sabha again
as in the past. The bill makes instant Triple Talaq illegal and entails three
years jail and a fine for offenders. The BJP got Parliament sessions
extended in view of these important bills. The BJP feels that any amendment in
triple talaq will take away its deterrent factor. So neither the BJP is ready
to make any changes in it nor do they want to send it to Parliament select
committee. There is another thing out of these developments that the BJP wants
to fathom depth of opposition before 35A is taken up in Parliament. Meanwhile, the entire opposition
is anxious as it failed to send the amendments to the Right to Information Act
to a Select Committee last week but what they feel that triple talaq is a
little tricky and even some of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners
like Janata Dal (United) might not support the government on this issue. But
the concern of the NDA is not their support but if they join the opposition
block and the prevailing situation in NDA vie-e-vis JD (U) is such that
anything might happen. JD (U) chief is looking for an opportunity to teach the
BJP a lesson. Opposition political parties are
not yet sure how to deal with the triple talaq bill in the Rajya Sabha where
the NDA still does not have a majority and it has to depend on Biju Janata Dal,
Telangana Rashtriya Samiti and YRSCP. But TRS has certain reservation on triple
talaq issue so the NDA will have to chalk out a new strategy. The opposition
political parties that are clear in their ideas about opposing this bill
included the Congress, TMC and the Left Front out of which the TMC is the most
vocal. The rest of the opposition has failed to figure out how to prevent the
NDA that it is not able to get it passed. Meanwhile, the BJP has issued a whip
to its MPs. It is not the party but some of
the MPs belonging to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Nationalist Congress Party and
Samajwadi Party who were not very enthusiastic on RTI Bill benefiting the NDA,
it is to be watched out for if the same thing happens in triple talaq case. It
would also be interesting to see how many opposition MPs will turn up to oppose
the bill.
