Three advocate generals of the Bengal government have resigned in the last six years. The last one, Jayant Mitra, is said to have resigned in view of the "difference of opinion" with Begum Mamta Banerjee. Media quoted Mitra as having said that "I had to quit to keep my spine firm and straight.
The veteran lawyer has been quoted as having said that he could not accept certain requests from politically influential people in violation of the legal framework. "I could not compromise with my conscience," Mitra said. "I have to answer to myself and I have to do this through the law. So, I thought it was time I left. Moreover, I should leave space for a new person who can probably deliver things according to their (the Trinamool Congress-run government) wish," Mitra told ET sitting in his chamber in South Kolkata.
Sources close to Mitra, however, said that he was asked to resign.
