Senior IAS officer Supriya Sahu (TN:1991) on Thursday was appointed Doordarshan's Director General, a post lying vacant for two years. Ms Sahu is currently working in her cadre state Tamil Nadu. She replaces Tripurari Sharan (IAS:BH) as Doordarshan's new DG. Her previous stint in Govt of India as Joint Secretary, Information & Broadcasting, brings her fair experience in handling the new assignment as DG, Doordarshan.
Her innovative approach towards administration was widely recognized when she served in the state (during 2002-2003) as Collector Nilgiris, a tea-growing district in the state. For instance, during a drought year, she ensured that women tea garden workers were gainfully employed through government-sponsored schemes.Although there were no provisions for employing only women in certain projects like road construction, she facilitated the establishment of women SHGs, which, in turn, took up contracts for road construction and employed women on a large scale.
Despite her stellar record, however, as soon as her appointment order as DG DD was issued by the DoPT, Doordarshan's Additional Director General Mahesh Joshi legally challenged it in the CAT and demanded a criminal action against the Prasar Bharati CEO for his role in the appointment process. Joshi's petition alleges that Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar provided fraudulent information about Sahu.
In his petition, Joshi has alleged that Sahu was recommended for the post of DG (Doordarshan) even though she is not qualified. It is alleged that she had not completed three years of regular service as a Joint Secretary by October 31, 2014, as required under the recruitment rules.
