shrenik-shah-making-of-a-legendThe name Shreyansh Shah may not sound familiar to many in the national capital. But in Gujarat, indeed all over the state, the name evokes tremendous respect and is seen synonymous with journalistic courage, ethics, and credibility. Even at 60, Shah goes through each and every item of Gujarat Samachar before it goes to print as he did before. And everyday Gujarati readers are feasted with news and their perspectives that are rarely seen in other newspapers of the same genre. Reasons for the success of Shah is not difficult to fathom. He avoids politicians and businesses as if they were virus carriers. This has also occasionally landed him in trouble. Way back in 1985, Congress CM Madhavsinh Solanki, who introduced KHAM (Kshatriya, Harijan, Adivasi, and Muslim) politics to the state, took his chances and sought to bully Shah and Gujarat Samachar to toe the Congress line on each and every issue. The result was Gujarat Samachar was not published for three days; and on the fourth day, when it hit the stands, it carried a cover story and the related editorial that made the Humpty-Dumpty Solanki fall and resign. In the subsequent period, Solanki didn't even know what had hit him. For 10 years, Gujarat Samachar blacklisted his name and carried stories without mentioning him anywhere in the newspaper. Solanki's trick was later played in another way by another govt that tried to pull a fast one by denying the newspaper any govt advertisement. Shah held his ground, took the matter to the court, and got all the advertisement revenue as compensation without publishing any advt for over a year. It is known that the Surat edition powers Gujarat Samachar with its huge circulation. For some reasons, the edition did not have an editor for over 10 years. Yet, Shah's dedication to work and his courage ensured that the edition never failed the readers and hence continued to rule the turf.
