Shah took over over as 30th Home Minister

By IndianMandarins- 01 Jun 2019

BJP President Amit Shah, on Saturday, took charge as the 30th Union Home Minister. Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba and Intelligence Bureau Chief Rajiv Jain welcomed him as he reached his North Block office. He was also felicitated by G K Reddy and Nityanand Rai; newly appointed MoS’ for Home Affairs. Immediately after taking charge, he called for a high-level meeting, involving the Home Secretary Gauba, IB chief Rajiv Jain and other senior officials, to take stock of internal security. Senior officials apprised him of works and functioning of different divisions. Reportedly, he may review division-wise presentation at the ministry early next week.

If some senior officials are to be believed Shah’s priorities would be to usher in a firm and decisive approach to secessionism, terrorism, and insurgency. Shah’s policy in J&K is expected to be proactive ahead of the Assembly elections in October-November this year. He may bring clarity on how the Centre wants to address the issue of Article 35A in J&K. Also, he may set the pace for completion of the NRC exercise in Assam within a timeframe set by the Apex Court. Getting the Citizenship Bill passed in the Rajya Sabha is another challenge before him.
