As the search for a new RBI governor intensifies, the government's options are getting limited. Indianmandarins has learnt that both Vijay Kelkar and Rakesh Mohan are not in a position to take up the job because of personal reasons. It is further learnt that no bureaucrat is anymore in the reckoning. The outgoing RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan's tenure is ending September this year.
Going by the present trend, the competition for this crucial appointment may narrow down to Subir Gokarn and former ICICI Bank CMD K V Kamath. Gokarn was earlier a deputy governor and is currently employed as the executive director at the International Monetary Fund. Kamath has been a versatile and dynamic banker and is currently heading the New Development Bank of BRICS nations in Shanghai.
