New Delhi (02.02.2021): Even as CBI Director Rishi Kumar Shukla's (IPS:1983:MP) tenure has come to its near-end, the joint exercise of MHA, DoPT, and CVC appears to have begun a little late. This may partially explain why the government hasn't called a meeting of the committee, made up of the PM, CJI, and Opposition Leader in the Lok Sabha, to deliberate and select a suitable candidate for the central government's premier investigative agency.
It is pointed out that there is no dearth of officers to man the agency's top job, but the procedure for constituting a panel of names isn't yet initiated.
In all likelihood, Shukla's successor may be picked up from four batches of IPS officers starting from 1984. Prominent and potential candidates among them are Loknath Behera (IPS:1985:KL), SK Jaiswal (IPS:1985:MH), HC Awasthy (IPS:1985:UP), SS Deswal (IPS:1984:HY), Rakesh Asthana (IPS:1984:GJ), and YC Modi (IPS:1984:AM).
Even though the delay is seen to have been unavoidable because of the government's preoccupation with the problems arising from the Chinese virus and the Chinese military games around India's land borders, the government may soon attend to the issue in view of the CBI's importance in public life.
