Shimla (01.02.2024): The Himachal Pradesh government has reinstated Sanjay Kundu (IPS: 1989: HP) as director general of police (DGP) of the state in compliance with the Supreme Court (SC) orders of January 12, 2024 that sat aside the December 26 order of Himachal Pradesh High Court.
While disposing of a petition filed by a Palampur-based businessman, the HC, on December 26, 2022, had directed the state government to remove Kundu and Kangra superintendent of police from their posts and move them to positions where they would not have any opportunity to influence the investigation in the FIRs referred to in the order.
Kundu had challenged the HC order by filing a petition before the SC. While setting aside the December 26 order of HC, the SC had said that the order was passed without compliance with the principles of justice. SC bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud had made the above observation on the petition filed by Kundu challenging that January 9 order of the HC.
