If some credible buzz is any guide Rupak Kumar Dutta (IPS:1981:KN) may shortly be elevated (in-situ) as Special Director, CBI. The post had fallen vacant after Anil Sinha (IPS:BH:1979) appointed as Director, CBI.
Dutta is presently serving as ADG, CBI. His empanelment in the rank of DG (on 23 December 2014) has already cleared the deck for his elevation as Spl Director, CBI.
Earlier it was speculated that he might be back to Karnataka as DGP but that proved to be speculation only.
