The NaMo administration on Friday appointed Rajiv Kumar (Retd IAS:1984:JH) as Election Commissioner vice Ashok Lavas (Retd IAS:1980:HY) who has resigned w.e.f 31 August 2020. He may take charge on 01 September 2020. Presently, he is Chairman, Public Enterprise Selection Board. The incumbent Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sunil Arora’s (Retd IAS:1980: RJ) tenure is ending April next year following which Sushil Chandra would replace him as the next CEC. Chandra’s term would end in May 2022. Rajiv Kumar will remain in the ECI as the second senior-most EC next to Sushil Chandra (Retd IRS IT:1980), and hence he would be the next CEC in 2024.
