New Delhi (13.02.2026): The government has informed Parliament that there are 2834 civil services posts vacant across IAS, IPS and IFoS and Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra had the highest gaps. The largest gap is in the Indian Administrative Service, which alone has 1,300 unfilled positions.
Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh informed Rajya Sabha that according to the Civil List compiled on January 1, 2025, the IAS has 1,300 vacancies against sanctioned strength of 6,877, the Indian Police Service has 505 against sanctioned strength of 5099, and the Indian Forest Service has 1,029 posts unfilled against 3,193 sanctioned posts.
Overall, across the three services, 2,834 posts remain vacant out of a combined sanctioned strength of 15,169, reflecting an overall vacancy rate of nearly 18.7 per cent. Cadre-wise data shows that Uttar Pradesh, with the highest authorised strength of 652 IAS posts, has 571 officers in position.
Madhya Pradesh has 391 IAS officers in place against 459 sanctioned posts, while Maharashtra has 359 officers against 435 sanctioned positions. In the IPS, states such as Bihar, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu also reported shortfalls between authorised strength and officers in position. The IFoS has been particularly hard hit, with several states showing sizeable gaps between sanctioned and filled posts.
