The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has reportedly given no clean chit to CBI Director Alok Verma in its report filed to the Supreme Court on November 16.

The Supreme Court bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice S. K. Kaul and K. M. Joseph on Friday called for the response on behalf of CBI Director Alok Kumar Verma to the report submitted by the CVC of its findings against him.

“Having perused the report, we are of the view that at this stage and before taking any decision, a copy of the report be given to the counsel for the petitioner, Mr. Alok Verma. It will be open for the petitioner to file a response to the report, again in a sealed cover. The aforesaid action has been considered necessary by the court to preserve the sanctity of the CVC and public confidence in the institution”.

A copy of the report has also been directed to be served in a sealed cover to the office of the Attorney General and the Solicitor General. “Needless to say, the report will be treated by utmost confidentiality”, ordered the court.

It added that at this stage, it was not inclined to call upon either the Union of India or any other party to submit a response.

The top court had adjourned the hearing on Monday, 12 November, after the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) pleaded for time to submit its inquiry report on Verma.

Verma is expected to file a counter-report on Monday, and the matter has now been posted to Tuesday.

The CJI, while hearing the case, commented that the CVC’s report was “mixed”, adding that a further probe would be required with respect to some of the allegations against Verma.

Meanwhile, Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for CBI Special Director Rakesh Asthana, appealed for the CVC report to be made public. The CJI reportedly declined Rohatgi’s request.
