Former IAS officer Parameshwaran Iyer (IAS:1981:UP), who took voluntary retirement in 2009 to pursue his innate interest in water, sanitation and renewable energy, is back into Bharat Sarkar. He has been put in charge of the ministry of drinking water and sanitation that will provide him the maximum opportunity to put his ideas into successfully implementing the Prime Minister's flagship Swach Bharat Mission. Hired for two years for his domain expertise, his appointment to the encadred position of a departmental secretary has got no eyebrows raised because; after all, he is a 'brother officer'.
Iyer is considered a star officer of the IAS and is well known for his Jal-Suraj program. He quit the IAS in 2009 to rejoin World Bank as a Senior Water and Sanitation Specialist in Washington DC where he served on deputation from April 1998 till September 2007.
Iyer's appointment is seen linked to a proposed World Bank $1500 million funding for the Swach Bharat Mission. Further, NaMo is said to have been not happy at all with the mission's progress so far. The previous Secretary of the department, Vijay Lakshmi Joshi, took voluntary retirement on November 21 last year. She was hand-picked by the Modi Government to head this crucial department on October 1, 2014, just a day ahead of the launch of the Swach Bharat Mission on October 2, 2014. Rural Development Secretary, Jugal Kishore Mohapatra, has been holding additional charge of the department so far.
