Cricketer turned politician and State Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu's equation with the Punjab bureaucracy remains as unpleasant as before.

He walked out last Friday from a meeting to discuss the state govt’s plans for the celebrations to mark Guru Nanak’s 550th birth anniversary as he felt that he was “bypassed” by the bureaucracy on certain issues.

Sidhu, who as Tourism Minister was scheduled to chair the meeting, got upset on being told that eight departmental committees for deciding arrangements for the celebrations in November 2019 had been set up by the Chief Principal Secretary (Retd IAS Suresh Kumar) to the CM. Sources stated that on hearing this, he angrily said, “Je afsaran ne hi saare faisle laene be, fer assin chhunchhuna bajaon aaye haan”.

Reportely, the next meeting is scheduled to be held on November 19 which will be presided over by Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh.

The minister was earlier cross with the top officer after he was summoned by the inquiry panel headed by B Purushartha (IAS:2002:PB), Divisional Commissioner- Jalandhar, in the Amritsar train tragedy earlier this month.

Reportedly, Cooperation Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa's attempt to pacify Sidhu didn't have any impact. Sources said Sidhu told Randhawa that officers could not take over ministers’ work and it was unacceptable that officers had decided on these crucial committees on their own, including the committee to be made for Sultanpur Lodhi, where Guru Nanak had stayed for some time. “If there are lapses in the preparations, these will be blamed on the sub-committee, not on the officers,” Sidhu is learned to have told his colleagues.
