Nagaland DGP Rupin Sharma (IPS:1992:NL) resigned "within minutes" of receiving an official order replacing him with Renchamo P. Kikon (IPS:1998:NL), much junior officer to Rupin Sharma. Reportedly, Kikon will continue to hold the additional charge of (Law & Order).
Home Commissioner R. Ramakrishnan had issued the official order in the "interest of public service" asking Kikon to take over from Rupin Sharma. As per the notification Sharma was placed under"compulsory wait" but he chose to submit his resignation.
Several organisations had launched a signature campaign across the state to retain Rupin Sharma following Nagaland Govt's letter to Govt of India in March, seeking replacement of Sharma as he did not have "requisite experience".
The appointment of Kikon came as a surprise because he is too junior to Rupin Sharma. Nagaland Govt in its letter to Centre had underlined that Sharma did not qualify the set criteria of 30 years of service to become DGP thus there was a need to Sharma with a senior police officer. But finally Govt exposed its intent by replacing Sharma with a much junior officer.
