In line with the Centre's Digital India initiative, Union Minister Chaudhary Birendra Singh on Friday launched a mobile app of MSTC, a public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Steel in Bengaluru. Addressing a meeting which was attended by Binoy Kumar, Secretary-designate of the Ministry of Steel along with other senior government officials and captains of the steel industry, Birendra Singh said the mobile app will bring buyer and seller close to each other besides, removing constraints before small buyers. Talking about India's position in the global steel industry, he said that there is a huge potential for growth of steel demand in the country. The per capital consumption of steel in India is at around 68 kg which, according to him, is much less than one third of the world average of around 208 kg. He said in view of programmes like 'Make in India,' 'Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna', 'Pradhan Mantri Gramin Vikas Yojna and others, demand for value added and sophisticated grade of steel is expected to grow in the country. He also informed the gathering that to meet the needs of R&D and innovation, the Ministry of Steel has created steel research and technology mission of India. Presently steel contributes about 2 per cent to the country's GDP. Since economy is on a growth trajectory and demand for steel is expected to rise, it is believed that it would add more to GDP in coming days.
