A Supreme Court bench comprising justices Ranjan Gogoi and R Banumathi, on 02 July, directed the Centre to file an affidavit within ten days giving details of the steps which would be taken for appointing the Lokpal; the anti-graft ombudsman. Attorney General KK Venugopal appeared before the bench for the Centre. The court was hearing a contempt petition filed by Common Cause (an NGO), which had raised the issue of non-appointment of the ombudsman despite the apex court's verdict of April 27 last year. Further, the bench posted the matter for hearing on July 17.
