New Delhi (05.01.2025): Ten days have passed since the Centre announced that Manipur Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi (1992) will be moving to New Delhi. The crisis-ridden state for over a year is trying hard to get back to normal while the Centre is yet to announce Joshi’s successor. The inordinate delay has left people clueless as who would lead the state administration.
A section of insiders says that the delay does not reflect indecisiveness but is part of a strategy. Having placed former Union Home Secretary A K Bhalla (Retd IAS: 1984: AM) as Manipur Governor along with former Army Chief General V K Singh as Governor in the neighbouring state, the Centre appears to have an entirely different framework to deal with the crises.
Irrespective of the approach and strategy to deal with the crises, a new CS is crucial which now seems to have become tricky and complex as well.
In the last ten days several names did rounds as next CS. In addition to three names (CLICK TO READ), a fourth name captured the imagination after Naga People’s Organisation (NPO) sent a missive to Union Home minister Amit Shah to appoint K Moses Chalai (1990) as Manipur Chief Secretary. It also requires a rethink if the appointment of a Naga officer as CS would serve the purpose.
NPO’s demand raises eyebrows whether this is a simple demand or it has deeper link to keep these three officers in Delhi out of the reckoning for the post of CS. The latest name to join the discourse is Sriram Taranikanti (1992), currently Director of LBSNAA at Mussoorie.
With each passing day, the list is getting longer and the probability of each officer as the next CS is getting shorter. Each prospective name has a commonality; all of them are serving at the Centre making the Centre’s task tougher.
LBSNAA Director’s name also joins the discourse, appointment of CS takes a new turn
