New Delhi (23.12.2024): Five days after the high-power committee meeting took place (on 18.12.2024) the President of India appointed former SC Judge Justice V Ramasubramanian as the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). Justice Ramasubramanian retired as a Supreme Court Judge in June 2023. 
Further, Priyank Kanoongo and Dr. Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi (Retd.) were appointed as  Members of the NHRC
Bhopal-based Kanoongo earlier served as a member of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) from 2015-2018 and later became Chairperson of the NCPCR (2019-2024).
The high-power committee, headed by PM, consists of the Lok Sabha Speaker, Home Minister, leaders of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, and Deputy chairperson of Rajya Sabha.
The post of NHRC chairperson had been lying vacant since June 1, 2024, when Justice (retired) Arun Kumar Mishra demitted from office on completing his tenure. 
Justice Ramasubramanian replaces Justice (Retd) Arun Mishra who completed his term as NHRC Chairperson on June 01, 2024 following this, Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, a member of the NHRC, started functioning as the commission's acting chairperson.
