Justice Mishra was recommended for elevation as Chief Justice of the High Court by the Supreme Court Collegium in December 2022. He joined the district judiciary in Odisha as an Additional District & Sessions Judge in 1999. He also served as a Special CBI judge and Registrar General of the Orissa High Court, before being appointed as a judge of the High Court in 2009.

In 2021, he was transferred to the Uttarakhand High Court, where he served as Acting Chief Justice for a short stint.
