Supreme Court judge Justice Adarsh Kumar Goyal, who is retiring in the first week of July, is likely to be the next chairperson of the National Green Tribunal.
Following the retirement of Justice Swatantar Kumar as the NGT chairperson on December 20, 2017, the apex post in the tribunal has been lying vacant. Though Justice Umesh Dattatraya Salvi was serving as the acting chairperson of the NGT, he also retired from the tribunal on February 13, 2018.
Justice Jawad Rahim was drafted as the acting chairperson of the NGT by superseding Justice Raghuvendra Singh Rathore.
However, unhappy with the move, Justice Rathore filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the appointment of Jawad Rahim as the acting chairperson of the NGT.
In this background, Justice Adarsh Kumar Goyal's likely appointment as the next NGT chief is seen as a major move in the legal fraternity.
