The Jammu and Kashmir cadre IPS officer Basant Rath (IPS:2000:J&K) was on Tuesday evening suspended with immediate effect for alleged instances of gross misconduct and misbehaviour. He was serving as Inspector General, Civil Defence. Following the suspension, his services were attached to police headquarters in Srinagar. Rath has been asked not to leave the headquarters without permission from the DGP, J&K. Rath had recently written a letter in which he expressed apprehension about his safety due to "certain activities" of the J&K Police chief. The letter had gone viral on social media triggering a controversy.
