The government has taken the matter very seriously when an IPS officer from Jharkhand cadre and his doctor wife skipped 14-day quarantine period mandated due to coronavirus using their clout on their return from Italy last week.

They had landed at Delhi airport but later traced to a hotel in Patna the next day. They were told to go into quarantine at Patna Medical College hospital. This became possible only after Bihar government officials reached out to the Jharkhand police brass with a request to intervene.

However, the officer denied all such accusations. He insisted that they did not need to undergo quarantine because they did not have any symptoms of coronavirus. If this is correct, then it reflected gaps in the surveillance mechanism for coronavirus.

Visitors to Italy are on the radar of the government particularly given that it has the highest number of coronavirus cases in the world after China. The said officer and his wife left for Italy and Switzerland on March 8 and returned on March 13.
