Lucknow (14.02.2024):The Samajwadi Party has nominated a retired bureaucrat and former state chief secretary Alok Ranjan (Retd IAS: 1978: UP) for the Rajya Sabha from the state. The 67-year-old Ranjan served as the state chief secretary from May 2014 to June 2016 under then chief minister Akhilesh Singh, and, on retirement, was appointed his chief adviser with the rank of a Cabinet minister. He held the post until the end of the SP government’s term in March 2017.
After filing his nomination in Akhilesh’s presence on Tuesday, Ranjan wrote on X, “The strength of our nation lies in the power of our democracy… Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are not just houses of Parliament, they are the platforms where the voice of our people rules supreme. It is this voice and their welfare that I will strive for.” In 2002, he was the joint secretary, defence, for the Central government. Prior to that, he served as Secretary to BJP CM Kalyan Singh in 1998.
