The NaMo administration on Tuesday, January 2, appointed Rajinder Khanna (Retd RAS:1978) as Deputy National Security Adviser. The post had fallen vacant after Arvind Gupta (Retd IFS) completed his three-year tenure in August last year.
It is for the first time when both the NSA the and the Deputy NSA are from intelligence background.
Khanna is currently serving as an OSD (Neighborhood Studies) in the National Security Council Secretariat. The Neighborhood Studies prepares policy papers of neighboring countries including Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal.
Khanna headed the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) between 2014-2016 and supervised several counter-terrorism operations and is considered an expert on Pakistan and Islamic terrorism.
