First breakthrough of a tunnel in Sikkim’s Sivok-Rangpo Rail Project

Rangpo (09.02.2022): Ircon International Ltd has achieved a major breakthrough of Tunnel No 14 of Sivok-Rangpo Rail Project (SRRP) on February 08, 2022, located in Rangpo Sub-Division, East Sikkim. This is the first breakthrough of the tunnel on this project, which was done in presence of officers from Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), Ircon International Ltd and construction agency Abir Infrastructure along with representatives from the Sikkim Government.

The length of Tunnel is 1977 m located in between Kumrek and Khanikhola in East Sikkim. This new rail link project is about 45 kms long and is characterized by 14 tunnels, 17 bridges and 5 stations. About 38 kms of the entire project alignment is passing through tunnels, about 36 per cent of tunneling work has already been completed. The project is targeted to complete by December 2023.
