New Delhi (17.01.2025):The Modi government has announced setting up of eighth pay commission which is going to impact a sizeable number of voters in New Delhi and South Delhi areas of the Capital city. Hundreds of thousands of employees, pensioners and defence personnel will be benefitted by the eighth pay commission. These government employees impact the poll outcome in Central and South Delhi. The announcement of eighth pay commission coincides with Delhi Assembly elections making the timing of announcement very crucial.
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had announced seventh pay commission in February 2014, a few weeks before the Lok Sabha polls. The last panel had recommended a fitment factor of 2.57 times -- increasing the salary in pay matrix 1 from Rs 7000 to Rs 18000 a month. The present government may provide slightly higher increase in the coming weeks. Normally the pay panel is headed by a Supreme Court judge having retired secretaries and senior economists as its members. The seventh pay commission had led to additional expenditure of Rs one lakh crore during 2016-17.
