New Delhi (20.12.2021): BJP led union cabinet decision to raise the legal age for girls’ marriage from 18 to 21 years, has got support from senior Congress leader P Chidambaram. The BJP has got support from a die-hard senior opposition leader at a time when this issue has become controversial and a social media debate is already going on. P Chidambaram made his views clear in a Tweet. He suggested that the marriage age should be 21 for both boys or girls. "The year 2022 should be used for a massive educational campaign on the benefits of marrying only after a boy or girl attained the age of 21 years. But the amended law should come into force from January 1, 2023, or later, he said. Probably, Chidambaram is playing the role of a constructive opposition by opposing or supporting issues on merits instead. This may be inappropriate on the party-line yet it has merit.
