CBI probe demanded against Jharkhand DGP

Ranchi (06.02.2025) With the appointment of Anurag Gupta (IPS: 1990: JH) as permanent Director General of Police (DGP) of Jharkhand, the opposition BJP on Wednesday demanded a CBI probe against him. Gupta was previously removed from the post by the Election Commission of India ahead of November 2024 Assembly polls but he was later appointed as DGP by the Hemant Soren government following its victory in Assembly elections.

State BJP president and former Jharkhand chief minister Babulal Marandi demanded CBI inquiry which was dismissed by the ruling JMM. The JMM called it a sign of frustration following BJP’s defeat in the Assembly elections. The party said the decision to appoint Anurag Gupta as the DGP was made in the cabinet.

Marandi alleged that Gupta’s tenure had been controversial and he had been involved in electoral malpractices. The JMM argued that the decision to appoint Gupta was made in a cabinet meeting, similar to practices in other states like West Bengal, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh.

Gupta was removed from the DGP post due to his “history of election-related misconduct” in previous polls, and the ECI had appointed Ajay Kumar Singh (IPS: 1989: JH) as DGP on October 21 last year. Gupta was made acting DGP in July last tear, replacing AK Singh.
