Bringing down the curtain over the controversy surrounding the appointment to the post of DGP of Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister Kamal Nath has announced Vivek Kumar Johri (IPS:1984: MP) as new DGP of the state. The incumbent DGP Vijay Kumar Singh (IPS:1984:MP) has been made Director of Sports and Youth Welfare.

It may be recalled that MP Govt had recently rejected a panel of three IPS officers sent by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for DGP post on grounds that it overlooked “willingness” of one of them. The UPSC panel had comprised V K Singh, Vivek Johri and Maithili Sharan Gupta (IPS:1984:MP).

MP Home Secretary Rajesh Kumar Jain had written to the UPSC that Johri (1984 batch) did not give his ‘willingness’ for the post of DGP in writing and hence naming him in the panel was against the mandate of UPSC’s guidelines for selection.
