The Bombay High Court directed
the Centre on Wednesday to take a reasoned decision on the issue of extending
the tenure of Maharashtra DGP Dattatray Padsalgikar who has been two short
extensions of three months each. His current extension will end on February 28. A state government's proposal to
extend the tenure of Padsalgikar is pending before the central government. A bench of Chief Justice Naresh
Patil and Justice N M Jamdar questioned the wisdom of giving short extensions
to Padsalgikar in the light of the responsibilities that have to be discharged
by a state DGP. The state government's case for a
two-year term for Padsalgikar also stands on firm legal ground in the light of
earlier SC judgments in such cases of short extensions. The SC had often noted
that a senior civil servant or police officer should have at least a two-year
tenure to do justice to their work.
