Gopal Baglay (IFS:1992) India’s high commissioner-designate to Sri Lanka, reached Colombo on May 8 in an Air Force aircraft with 12.5 tonnes of medical supplies. Baglay was supposed to join his post around two months back but his joining deferred due to Covid-19-related restrictions.


Former MEA spokesperson who was also with the PMO. On Friday, Baglay hopped on to an Il-76 transport aircraft of Air Force that transported 12.5 tonnes of essential medicines and medical items as a special friendly gesture from India during auspicious Vesak week. 


This was the fourth consignment of medical supplies sent by India to Sri Lanka in recent weeks, underscoring Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of jointly fighting the Covid-19 pandemic that he had outlined during his video conference with leaders of Saarc on March 15, 2020. Three consignments of life-saving medicines and medical gloves were delivered to Sri Lanka last month.
