After the Centre denied its consent to the tenure extension of the outgoing Chief Secretary Rajeev Swarup, the Ashok Gehlot Government on 31 October 2020 appointed Niranjan Kumar Arya (IAS:1989:RJ) the new Chief Secretary. Prior to this Arya was working as Additional Chief Secretary, Finance. To draft Arya to the coveted post the government superseded the seniority of eight IAS officers. In addition, the state government effected a major bureaucratic rejig and transferred and posted as many as 21 senior IAS officers.
