Tamil Nadu cadre IAS officer U Sagayam has reportedly applied for voluntary retirement from service. Sagayam is presently working as vice-chairman of Science City. Citing ‘personal’ reason he applied for VRS on 2 October. Further, he stated that he would be devoting himself to “service to the society”.

Later he has sent another letter to the government requesting that he could be relieved by 30 December or even earlier.

A section of officials speculates that Sagayam would have sought VRS as he might be planning to take a plunge into politics ahead of the Assembly elections.

It may be underlined that Sagayam was the first IAS officer in the country who, during his tenure as  Collector of Namakkal district in 2009, declared his personal assets voluntarily in the public domain while he was.
