The NaMo administration has made its intent clear that it is not in a hurry to appoint the new Chairperson of Union Public Service Commission and named Ms Alka Sirohi (Rtd IAS:1974:MP) as the acting Chairman w.e.f. 21st September 2016. The outgoing Chairman Deepak Gupta (Trd IAS:1974:JH) will demit his office on 20th September on attaining 65 years of age. Deepak Gupta had taken over as the chairman of UPSC on 22nd November 2014 after the tenure of then UPSC chairman Rajni Razdan came to an end. As per convention, the UPSC chairman is appointed from among the members of the Commission and being the senior most member of UPSC it was the turn of Ms Alka Sirohi to be appointed Chairman. But Gupta became the first chairman to be appointed by breaking away from the tradition.
