New Delhi (18.05.2023): Under Operation Samudragupta 4,000 kg of various drugs is seized so far and various other security agencies too have seized huge quantity of contraband drugs despite the fact that the two specialised security agencies guarding India’s boarder- Border Security Force (BSF) under the Union Home ministry for land borders and Indian Coast Guard (ICG) under the Defence Ministry for coastal borders – don’t have regular heads. Inordinate delay in finding regular DGs raises many questions.
Post of a regular BSF DG has been lying vacant since December 31, 2022 when Pankaj Kumar Singh (IPS: 1988: RJ) hung his boots. Similarly, Director General of Indian Coast Guards Virendra Singh Pathania retired on January 31, 2023. Even though these were scheduled vacancies at the top rank, the MHA and the Ministry of Defence are yet to arrive at a decision over names of regular chiefs for BSF and ICG.
India has a land boundary of about 15,200 km and the total length of the coast line of the mainland including Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep is 7,516.6 km. It is really a matter of concern that the two specialized forces don’t have regular heads
The recovery of huge amounts of drugs in quick succession is said to be the tip of the iceberg. Any ad hocism is detrimental to the efficiency of such forces. The case in point may be of NCB official Sameer Wankhede raiding a cruise and arresting son of Shah Rukh Khan but later on when the CBI investigated the matter things turned out to be different which had a dent on the illustrious image of the current dispensation too. So, a proper vigil at every point is required as strong drug cartels work globally which have terror links as well for that you need to get rid of ad-hocism for sure.
