why-did-ed-officer-launch-attack-on-revenue-secretaryFor almost all television channels and dailies, it became a major news headline on Wednesday after a Joint Director in the Enforcement Directorate, who was part of a probe into the 2G spectrum, coal block allocation scams as well as the Aircel-Maxis case made a scathing attack on Revenue Secretary questioning him if he had developed animosity against him by "siding with scamsters and their affiliates". Revenue Secretary reportedly refused to make any comment on the ED official's allegations against him but informal sources claimed that there was no substance, except few, in the allegations made against Adhia. Dr Rajeshwar Singh (Jt Director, ED) on 11 June wrote a letter to Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia asking a series of awkward questions from him, ranging from ignoring his promotion deliberately, "compromising National security", "set scores on an ego trip" among others. The letter became a public after the Supreme Court withdrew a blanket protection it had given to Dr Rajeshwar Singh earlier. The apex court also asked the government that it was free to look into the "serious" allegations against the concerned ED official. This observation came after the central government counsel produced a sealed envelope seemingly containing details of a phone call received by Dr Rajeshwar Singh from Dubai. However, the ED issued a formal statement in support of its Jt Director saying he was a responsible officer with outstanding career records. The statement read "to put the record straight Dr Rajeshwar Singh received a call in 2016 from a person based out of Dubai who gave important information regarding a case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate." The statement issued by ED further read "Dr Rajeshwar Singh passed on this information to the Directorate and the same was used in the investigation of the case. It is important to note that he received only one call and that too it was an incoming call from this person in Dubai,". In the letter to Adhia the ED officer said, "it pained me further that you have expressed many a times to senior officers over casual conversations that I have been manipulating the judiciary, especially the Supreme Court of India". It further read "it is strange and also unbelievable that after so many years in public service, you believe that so many judges can be manipulated and that too over such a long period of time". Rajeshwar Singh, who reportedly proceeded on leave for a period of one year, alleged his promotion became due from April 1, 2017 but it has not yet been processed in the ministry for set of reasons.
